Before 3D product images or marketing images can be created, the product first needs a 3D model. An existing CAD model can often be used as a starting point, or you can send the product to me to be modelled in 3D.
There is no single starting point
A finished product is an excellent starting point, but it is not essential. The model can also be built from a similar package, separate parts, CAD files or packaging design materials. Different sources can also be combined.
Tell me what stage your product is at and what material you already have. I can determine whether it is enough for modelling and what additional information may be needed. You do not need to work this out in advance.
The preferred option
A physical sample lets me see the shape, proportions and how the surfaces react to light. This helps me create a model that closely matches the real product.
We will agree on the shipment before you send anything. The sample does not have to be a finished retail product: a prototype, empty package or separate product parts may also be enough.
If the product is located within a reasonable distance, I can come and inspect it on site. Tell me where the product is located and we can discuss whether a visit is practical.
I return the product you send unless we agree otherwise. We will agree on the shipping and return arrangements at the beginning of the project.
These can also get us started

The final product is not always necessary. A similar package can be used as the basis for the model when the final dimensions and differences are known. The product can also be reconstructed from its individual parts.

I can use an existing design model and add any missing parts if necessary. Even unfinished CAD material can be a useful starting point. I review the files before estimating the scope of the work.

A packaging structure drawing or dieline, dimensions and print artwork may be enough to build the model. A finished physical package is therefore not always required.

If no other material is available, I can model the product from photographs and measurements. This can still produce good results, but it is not the preferred method because shapes, surfaces and small details are more difficult to interpret reliably.
Shape is only part of the picture
A CAD model often defines the shape, but not necessarily how the finished product looks. Gloss, roughness, transparency and colour all have a major effect on the final image.
If a physical sample is not available, I may need photographs of the real product or reference images of the intended material. Label and packaging artwork also helps with the finishing.
I will tell you what additional photographs or information are needed for your specific project. You do not need to gather everything before getting in touch.
