3D-ILLUSTRATION
WTF - Halloween Monster

I received an unusual but fun brief for WTF’s Halloween campaign: What would a construction adhesive look like if it came to life for Halloween? I haven’t really done character work, but I took the challenge as a chance to try something new. I’m not sure whether to call this a 3D marketing image or a straight 3D illustration—either way, the idea became a caulk cartridge whose contents have turned into a tentacled monster. I used a 3D product image I’d created earlier as the base, cut the model in half, and sculpted the monster around it. The lighting, materials, and rendering were planned to support the campaign’s dark yet playful mood. I also came up with the slogan “Monster of an Adhesive,” which the client liked.

Goal

Imagine what a construction adhesive would look like as a monster. 3D model the character and push yourself creatively. Produce images of the final piece in various formats for social media channels.

Process

    • Ideation and sketching
    • Sculpting an organic character from digital clay.
    • Material and texture design
    • Lighting design
    •  Rendering with and without background for greater versatility
    • Post-processing images to multiple sizes according to social media specs

Result

    • A mischievous 3D character that received an incredible reception at the reveal event
    • Plenty of content for social media
    • Despite being new to character work, I created a character that delighted the client
    • I learned a lot, and the client saw new possibilities in my versatile skill set
    • The character was later nicknamed “Bob”
